Coach In The Spotlight - Trish Swinscoe

Trish Swinscoe qualified through The Coaching Academy programme and has enthusiastically agreed to share her coaching experience, so we have put her in the Coaching Hot Seat. Here is Trish’s story:-

The journey for me as a life coach has been a very special journey. I started my diploma as a life coach when I realised that the journey ahead to become a counsellor would be a very long one, especially as I am a single Mum working full time initially as a IT Business Systems Analyst, and working away from home part of the week but in the middle of my journey I relocated from Yorkshire to Wales and started a job as an IT Trainer, it seemed back then to do another diploma could possibly be suicidal or pure madness on my part. I remained focused on the end goal I could be a Life Coach before a Counsellor was the driving force for me, and it could help me on my way too.

The journey started when I saw an advert on the web to spend two days on a Introduction event for Life Coaching, it struck a note with me, it sang out all the things I wanted, and I could see I already held some of the qualities to become a coach, in fact I would go so far as to say I was already using some of the tools on myself, just not very effectively through lack of technique, which I could see I would gain from doing my diploma as a life coach with the Coaching Academy.

My journey truly began with the arrival of a very large box following me “signing up” for my Personal Development Life Coaching Diploma, I would go so far as to say I uttered the words “oh dear what have I done”, but a year later, with a lot of discipline, studying and determination, and applying my new coaching skills, I qualified. When I got the news I had qualified I wept for joy, the best reward was the hug from my little ones who hugged me and said: “we knew you could do it Mum, we are proud to call you OUR mum.”

Along the way I took advantage of all the accelerator days, and through that I have made a good many friends and acquaintances. A lesson here is hold onto these people they will provide support, assistance and maybe as I am finding out your business acquaintances for the future, so truly enjoy the days, not just for the learning. Take your time to do the phone assessments but do not procrastinate. There are a list of books on this subject, as one book says: “Feel the fear and do it anyway”, put those words to the test, be what you practice and read,  it’s true we can be what we tell ourselves we want to be, recognise your inner coach : Be Positive, Encouraging, Supportive, Unconditional, Non-judgemental, Believe in you, want the very best for yourself – leave any doubt to someone else, they maybe your clients one day and you will be in a position to help them.

When you start to build your book of practice clients, read as much as you can on Life Coaching, try what comes naturally within the realms of reading about Life coaching, don’t be afraid to try a new question when your training – that’s the time to try it.

Store as much information about marketing yourself as a coach if you do not come from a marketing or media background – I didn’t, I came from IT (but that will help me too), you will need all this as you progress. Start to put a plan together on how to market yourself before you have to do it for real, and don’t be afraid to seek the help of all those that offer it.

Right now I am at the marketing stage, I can’t say it’s an easy step, but coaching teaches you some good techniques to deal with it.

I love coaching not just with my clients but how its helped me personally too. I want to go and tell the world how great it is, especially any of those that doubt it. The best thing about coaching is knowing you are making a difference to peoples lives. I have learnt so much about myself too. I get to work flexible hours and spend more time with the children since quitting my job and setting up full time as a Life Coach. I have met so many interesting clients through Skype people from all over the world.

I work with many clients on Motivation and Confidence and love it, but also want to put back into the system what I got out, and share my experience with you too. Where I can I take on pro bono clients to support this value.

For me know the greatest thing that could happen in my coaching business in the next twelve months is to make a success of the workshops I am currently putting together on Confidence and Motivation, to get some articles published (tricky when you are dyslexic like me but that won’t stop me) getting a radio interview would be the icing on the cake.

And if coaching has taught me anything, if you have a goal, anything is possible, and I do.

If you would like to connect with me you can do so through The Coaching Academy LinkedIn group.
